How To Create A Capture Page

by Paul Cooley on May 5, 2009

megaphone_gold-backCapture pages become a big deal if you are looking to build a list. The problem is, many don’t know how to build a squeeze page or what is also known as a landing page. Or they may know that list building is a smart thing to do, but not know how to go about doing it.

As I mentioned in a post I wrote titles The Two Most Needed Skills In Marketing, I covered how you need to get traffic and you need to have good sales copy. This is very true and very important when you are trying to build a list.

The whole purpost for a capture page is to capture your reader’s contact information. This way you can always email them with other product offers, give them updates, tips advice. Basically it’s to keep you in front of them, so when it’s time to launch a new product or whatever you are doing, you have a whole list to market to.

Have a great converting capture page is awesome! Back when I was doing a lot of Network Marketing, with one company I was able to accumilate a down line of over a 1000 people only using a capture page and Google Adwords. Plus it really wan’t that great looking squeeze page! But what I’m going to show you will help you build even a better one than that one that I used.

Before we dig into how to create a capture page, let me tell you there are companies out there that provide capture page services. This is where they provide one template, an auto responder (usally not the greatest) and all you need to do is tell them what you want the page to say all for a monthly charge. But today, we are going to get into the things you need to know if you want to do it yourself…

So let’s dig in to how to build a capture page…

First off, you will need a domain name. You can get one at Godaddy.com and I recommend doing a Google search for Godaddy coupon codes before you buy one. You will save a couple bucks. :)

Next, you are going to need to host your capture page, if you aren’t currently hosting anything, I recommend using Hostgator. This will be a monthly payment on your part and you are looking at about $7.00 per month.

Once you have your domain name hosted, you will next need to decide how you are going to get your squeeze page setup or how you are going to do it.

You have the choices of doing it yourself and figuring out HTML stuff. Or you have hire someone else to do it, which I recommend if you don’t know HTML  coding. It will makes things much easier and faster for your to get your page up and start generating leads.

Another option you have is, Worpress. Now there are two options using the Wordpress software…

- You can setup your Wordpress blog using Cpanel inside your Hostgator account, once you have found a Wordpress template you want to use, you can have someone customize it so it will look and work more like a capture page.

- Or you can use some awesome looking premade Wordpress templates that some friends of mine have come up with called One Click Sales Sites. The whole purpose of these templates are to be used as a capture/sales page. I personally use these with all of my  Capture pages and Sales Pages now. Using this setup is extremelly easy to use and you will end up with awesome looking capture pages. :) Plus, you don’t need to know anything about HTML!

Once you have decided on which templates you are going to use, there are two more things you need to do…

- You need to have an auto responder setup. An auto responder allows you to send prewritten emails to your subscribers. You can have a whole email series or a weekly/monthly newsletter, or just send updates. I highly recommend using Aweber. Aweber is one of the best autoresponer providers out there and it is well worth the investment. It’s especally nice to know that your emails will make it to your subscriber’s inbox and not their junk mail.

Remember: You want to stand out from the crowd of other emails they are recieving. So offer value to your readers, don’t just send them special offers and stuff to buy. Give them valuable training, tips, resources, etc.

The next and extremely important thing you must focus on is Copywriting. Writing good sales copy is HUGE! You can have the best looking capture page, but if it doesn’t have good sales copy, you’re in trouble! Time and thought needs to go into this. Take the time to think about who your target audience is and what they are looking for. Sales copy can also be outsourced if you don’t want to take the time to do this.

If Copywriting is something that interests you I recommend checking out the following recources:

- Ulimate Copywriting Workshop

- Ben Settle

- Chris Haddad

Once everything is complete, you will then need to drive traffic to your squeeze page and start generating leads! We will be covering that soon. :)

I am also going to be holding a “How To Creat A Capture Page in Under 30 Minutes” Webinar on May 9th at 12 noon PST. If you are interested in attending the cost in only $12 and I will be showing you the steps that I took to generate a down line of over a 1000 people in less then two months. To your success!

Nicely written, Paul. And bless you for the way you approach your life and business. In an era when someone like Bernie Madoff makes everyone scared to deal with anyone, it’s refreshing to see a guy like you doing so well. And if my copywriting materials found at http://bit.ly/24eYTO can help you and your followers, I’d be happy to chat with you about your becoming an Affiliate to help market this and then be compensated for it. And as a Dad yourself, perhaps you’d like to create a post or two for my Ultimate Work At Home Dads site. Wow, glad I found your post tonight!

Best,

Thanks Paul, I agree with that you need to encourage your visitors to put their email in the box. It’s sometimes hard to come up with any original ideas. There are just so many “FREE reports” going out at the moment.
Incidently, you may want to add this to your list, – it’s just been launched recently. It’s the Instant Capture Page, which is ideal for newbies as it has unlimited capture pages for a single fee. I’m using it for squeeze pages on my affiliate product pages.
