How Do You Tweet and Why Do You Follow?

by Paul Cooley on January 31, 2009

follow-me-250When we are talking about Twitter as a Marketing Tool, I have seen many different techniques used. Some of which I didn’t like very much and I am curious as to what you think about it…

So my questions to you today are, How Do You Tweet and What are the deciding factors that will cause you to hit the Follow button?

Let’s tackle the the first question, how are you using Twitter as a marketing tool? Like I said I have seen it done in many ways as I am sure you have too! There are some that only Tweet with they have updated their Squidoo page, some will tweet about anything and everything, and others use it to brand them as leaders. Are any of those wrong??

I would say that it depends on what your goals are, if you want to annoy people and get un-followed then you should tweet about your business opportunity every five minutes! But if you are doing this thing for the long run and want to position yourself as a leader and expert in your niche, you don’t want to try to sell people stuff, you want to offer them value. There is an interesting look on this that seems to be getting more poplular these days ever since Seth Godin came out with his book “Tribes”.  But in all reality there is truth to the “Tribes” way of doing things. As a leader you have followers and it’s your job to give them value by great content, training, tips, etc. Something that I personally think is huge is if someone replys to you, answer back! It’s been very interesting how many of the “Top Marketers” I have tweeted to and never got a response. In my thinking that’s not smart leadership and you stand the chance of losing followers very fast. Now I do understand that if you have TONS of followers it’s going to be hard to respond to all of them, but when someone complements you, it take two seconds to say thank you!

I also want to bring up something interesting I heard a few days ago on an interview that Coach Deb and Aloha Arlean was on. The topic was Twitter and something that Coach Deb said something that Aloha Arlean disagreed with, but it I think they were saying the same thing. You can watch this interview and see for yourself. Something else that was mentioned in that Interview got me to thinking about another questions…. Do you think posting a Tweet that let’s people know you have updated your blog is a good thing or not?

Why Do You Follow?

I am also wanting to hear from you what makes you decide to follow people? Or do you use auto-follow? I personally don’t do the auto-follow thing. I check out profiles and look for a few different things..

1. I look at the number of people they are following and the number that are following them. I do think to try to find out if these people really are following me for a reason or just hoping that I will follow back. There are many people that will follow you and if you don’t follow them back, they will un-follow. I have laughed a few times when I see this one guy follow me every month, just waiting to see if I will follow. :)

2. I look to see if they are Tweeting quality tweets or spam.

3. I look to see if they have a blog, it’s always disappointing to me when I click on the link and it takes me to a sales page.

4. I look to see what we have in common.

Now that is just the way that I do it. Not saying it the the right way, just my way. :) So now I would love to hear how you use Twitter and how it’s working for you. I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

To your success!
